Reincarnation of plastics – Bioplastics

04 December 2019

Our planet produces approximately 300 million tons of plastic waste every year. This weight is equivalent to the weight of the entire human population; hence, it has become one of the current priorities of this generation to reduce plastic waste by switching to bio-based plastic or bioplastic. Bioplastics are made from renewable sources such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, recycled food waste, etc.

Unlike conventional plastic, bioplastics can easily get decomposed via bacteria or other living organisms, thereby avoiding landfill and pollution.

Bio-based and non-biodegradable: Several global companies have shown interest in bio-based and non-biodegradable plastics and have transformed quantity of their packaging to these materials. These types of plastics are driven by three types of polymers – Bio-polyethylene terephthalate (PET), biopolyethylene (PE), and Bio-PA. Such types of plastic are utilized in both rigid and flexible packaging solutions.

Baked goods, fresh fruits, and vegetables packaging are some of the application segments for bio-based and non-biodegradable packaging. Creams, lipsticks, and other personal care products are witnessing a high usage of bio-PE or bio-PET, and the usage is likely to bolster the global bioplastic packaging market.

  • The demand for bio-based and non-biodegradable plastic is expected to increase during the forecast period as it is environment-friendly and mainly used in packaging that provides a high barrier resistance to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other similar gases.
  • Legislation across countries banning the use of plastics (single-use plastics) in the form shopping bags, carrier bags, and other similar conventional plastics has led to the demand for bioplastic packaging and is likely to increase further
  • Geographically, Europe, the US, and China lead the market in terms of demand. Stringent laws in Europe and North America are expected to boost the demand for bioplastic packaging
  • The APAC region is a major production hub for several bioplastic manufacturers and is expected to remain a major supplier to the global market

Bio-based and biodegradable: These types of biodegradable plastics have wide adoption in Europe. Such plastics consist materials such as PLA (polylactic acid), PHA (polyhyroxyalkanoates), cellulose, and starch-based materials that offer functionalities on par with conventional plastics with capability of composability and biodegradability, which traditional plastics lacks, thereby leading to pollution.

The production capacity is expected to increase for several materials as new producers are expected to enter the market during the forecast period. PLA is one of the most easily compostable materials and also approved when it comes in contact with food.

  • Bio-based and biodegradable bioplastics are eco-friendly, and several new manufacturers are expected to enter the market, thereby leading to high production and demand for such plastics
  • Starch-based bioplastics are expected to play a major role in the usage of bioplastic for bulk packaging, which is expected to drive market further.
  • PLA bioplastic prices are on par with conventional plastic alternatives such as PS and PET. The prices are expected to reduce as the economies of scale in the intra-regional level help to reduce the production cost
  • The PHA material used in biodegradable plastics, which is being explored to replace conventional plastic such as polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), PET, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc. Several grades of PHA have the property to decompose even in oceans, unlike other plastics. PHA has generated interest from many packaging vendors which is likely to stimulate the market further
