Transplant Diagnostics – Curing the incurable

14 February 2020

Transplant diagnostics involves the assessment of aspects, such as compatibility testing, safety testing, diagnosing infections, organ rejection monitoring, and transplant feasibility testing associated with transplantation pre-, peri-, and post-transplantation. Ongoing technological advancements and innovations witnessing in the development of new genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic biomarkers, especially in molecular diagnostics, can provide better personalized management for transplantation and can detect rejection episodes and infections early, thereby improving the patient outcomes and success rate. Over 70,000 stem cell transplants were performed in 2013 globally. In 2018, according to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT) data, approximately 125,000 solid organ transplantations were performed globally. In the US, over 5.5 million people had heart failure in 2017 and the number is expected to rise to 8 million by 2030.

Solid Organ Transplantation vs Soft Tissue Transplantation

Solid organ transplantations comprise the kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, and heart transplantations. The increasing number of organ failures due to chronic diseases is expected to be the primary reason to bolster the growth of the solid organ transplantations segment globally. Currently, chronic diseases account for around 75% for physician visits and 80% of hospital admissions worldwide and these numbers are likely to increase in the coming times. Chronic conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), heart diseases, and diabetes are likely to affect 165 million people in the US by 2025.

Similarly, chronic heart failure (CHF) affects 1−2% of the adult population per annum across the globe, while the prevalence for the same in the elderly population is more than 10%. In the US, over 8 million people are expected to be affected by CHF in 2030. In North America, the presence of a large pool of the patient population with chronic diseases and the high acceptance of advanced solid organ transplantations procedure is likely to support market growth. The APAC region has the largest population density with a high proportion of several chronic diseases. The region is expected to witness significant growth due to advancements in healthcare infrastructure, coupled with favorable public and private initiatives.

Soft tissue transplantations are also referred as bone marrow transplantation. The patient receives healthy stem cells to treat fatal diseases such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and hematological malignancies. Donor screening plays an imperative role in these transplantations as the screening helps physicians to diagnose potential complications before and after transplantations. The growing need for several transplant diagnostic tests is contributing to the increased demand for a wide range of diagnostics and test kits, thereby boosting the segment.

Soft tissue transplantation is the fastest-growing segment and is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 7% during the forecast period. The demand for soft tissue transplantations in Middle Eastern countries is expected to increase as living-donor kidney transplantation is an established practice in the region. In Europe, the availability of highly sophisticated healthcare infrastructure and the high awareness of advanced transplant procedures are contributing to market growth during the forecast period. France, the UK, Spain, Germany, and Italy are likely to be major revenue contributors to the European market.Request for your free sample now! Prominent Vendors
