CLEAN HYDROGEN INDUSTRY INSIGHTS
The global clean hydrogen market size to reach revenues of USD 2098.44 million by 2026, growing at a CAGR of approximately 14.01% during the forecast period.
The rising global warming due to the maximum emission of carbon dioxide to the environment contributed by transportation, industries, and power generation are the major factors increasing the demand for clean hydrogen. The APAC region has the highest contribution of carbon dioxide emission to the environment, followed by North America. To curb the emission from vehicles and reduce air pollution, the demand for fuel cell vehicles is increasing across the regions. The hydrogen can be used to charge these FCV vehicles, and henceforth, there is a huge scope for clean hydrogen in transportation applications.
The European region is expected to witness the highest incremental growth of 140.11% during 2020-2026. The green hydrogen market in Europe will witness the highest growth due to government initiatives toward eliminating carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Germany is the most significant contributor in the European region in terms of the production of clean hydrogen. The demand for clean hydrogen in Germany will be driven by transport, power generation, and industries. Currently, Europe and Asia are the two continents dominating the hydrogen demand creations. In the APAC region, Japan is the largest producer of clean hydrogen. The South American country, already a major supplier of minerals, has the potential to export green hydrogen, producing 25 million tons per year of green hydrogen by 2050.
CLEAN HYDROGEN MARKET TRENDS & DEVELOPMENTS
- European Union released its hydrogen strategy in July 2020 and is committed to installing a 6 gigawatt of renewable hydrogen electrolyzer by 2024.
- Plug Power Inc is developing the largest clean hydrogen production facility in North America. The plant will produce 45 metric tons of clean liquid hydrogen and provide its daily services to the Northeast region by 2023.
- The Japanese government pioneered the 'Basic Hydrogen Strategy' and made investments into R&D over the few years and has continued to provide strong support and funding for several zero-emission projects. Japan contributes over 26% of the APAC clean hydrogen market share.
- Korea is planning to build a society that harnesses hydrogen as an energy source for mobility and power generation. According to the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI), the hydrogen industry is worth over USD 11 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach around USD 21 billion by 2030.
- The UK-based solar developer Eco Energy World has unveiled a plan to build one of Australia's world's largest clean hydrogen projects. The plant is predicted to produce 33,000 tons of clean hydrogen a year.
- California Government is planning to invest USD 230 million in hydrogen projects before 2023, and the world's largest clean hydrogen projects are being built in Lancaster, CA, by an energy company.
INSIGHTS BY TECHNOLOGY
The global clean hydrogen market by alkaline electrolyzer is expected to reach over USD 1,277.41 million by 2026.
The alkaline electrolyzer is one of the easiest hydrogen production methods as it produces 99.9% pure gas. The electrodes which are used in the techniques are robust zirconium dioxide-based diaphragms and Nickel coated stainless steel. The alkaline electrolyzer is expected to grow due to its low price compared to other electrolyzers. PEM electrolysis is more dynamic and responsive to changing power inputs requirement than alkaline electrolyzer. The key components in the PEM electrolyzer are the bipolar plates with flow channels, current collectors, and membrane electrode assembly. The market for PEM electrolyzer will also increase during the forecast period because it provides the pure form of hydrogen. Many companies and government bodies consider PEM the best suitable electrolyzer for hydrogen production during the coming years.
INSIGHTS BY END-USER
The major use of clean hydrogen is to use it for electricity production via fuel cells.
The transport sector contributed the largest share of 45.20% to the overall green hydrogen market in 2020. While some companies are selling hydrogen cars in selected countries, battery-operated electric vehicles are being chosen by an increasing number of car manufacturers worldwide. A project under consultation by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) aims at increasing this fleet to 50,000 taxis in Paris by 2030, as part of a billion-euro investment to add 11 GWh of hydrogen storage capacity in the city.
Hydrogen is either used by blending it in natural gas grids or developing dedicated hydrogen boilers in building sectors. The UK government is currently supporting a project called Hy4Heat. The government plans to invest around USD 173 million and establish a technically safe and convenient approach to replace methane gas with hydrogen in residential and commercial buildings and gas appliances.
INSIGHTS BY GEOGRAPHY
The European clean hydrogen market is estimated to reach over USD 1,243.52 million by 2026.
Germany, France, Spain, Netherland, and others have already released a national hydrogen strategy and clean hydrogen as energy-efficient strategies. The clean hydrogen projects are ramping up, as multiple companies have announced major low or zero-carbon hydrogen projects in Europe. In Europe, the German government to create demand for hydrogen about 90 to 110 Tw by 2030.
The increasing deployment of renewable energy resources in residential & commercial areas led by the growing consumer purchasing power and regulatory changes are the major factors driving the growth of the green hydrogen market in North America. Clean buildings are the latest trends in the US, where cities like Austin are the fastest-growing markets for clean house buildings.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Countries in the APAC region such as China and India have more opportunities in the clean hydrogen market.
Key players such as Linde Plc, Air Liquide, and others are involved in several ongoing sustainability partnerships in the global market. Companies with better technical and financial resources can develop innovative products that could threaten competitor products. Vendors must develop new technologies and remain abreast with upcoming innovations to have a competitive advantage over other vendors. The requirement for clean hydrogen in the industry will arise due to their zero-emission of carbon dioxide to the environment and create lucrative market opportunities.
