Medical Equipment Sterilization Market: Potential Alternatives to Ethylene Oxide Sterilization Gaining Momentum

Date:

Ethylene oxide (EO) sterilization is designed to perform low temperature, chemical sterilization treatment of medical and pharmaceutical products sensitive to temperature/humidity. A range of program options, installation arrangements, and loading options increase versatility. The EO sterilizer uses a sterilizer that can be potentially explosive. Therefore, these sterilizers incorporate features, devices, and additional protective measures designed to operate in a potentially explosive atmosphere, according to established parameters that guarantee a very high level of protection against explosions.

The medical device manufacturers and sterilization service companies work on reducing or eliminating emissions from ethylene oxide (EO) sterilization operations, some involved parties are diligently developing promising alternatives.

  • Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
  • Nitrogen Dioxide
  • Accelerator-Based Radiation
  • Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide-Ozone

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sees potential in these new alternatives to ethylene oxide (EO) sterilization, as safe and effective methods, or technologies for packaged medical devices.

According to the research report the global sterilization equipment market is expected to reach over USD 13 billion by 2027. Medical Equipment Sterilization Market to Grow at a CAGR of Over 8.5% During 2022-2027. The medical equipment sterilization market is an oligopoly market with a few key players dominating the market. The medical equipment sterilization market is advancing slowly, with a limited number of new product launches. Not many new companies are entering the market space. However, some new companies like Datasea are coming up with new products such as sound-based sterilization methods. There is a huge demand for sterilization products which are substitutes for the ethylene oxide (EO) in the market.

Accelerator-based radiation sterilization methods from STERIS include electron-beam irradiation and X-ray irradiation. Using the former, electrons are generated using electricity and then accelerated to near light speed; these high-energy electrons are the radiation source for sterilization. The X-ray method uses ionizing energy from electron-beam accelerators to generate electromagnetic energy (photons). The specific accelerator-based radiation method that STERIS is working on with the FDA has not been disclosed. Radiation sterilization produces no chemical emissions. The process leaves no residuals on sterilized medical devices. Radiation provides faster processing times than EO sterilization.

Most manufacturers prefer to use EO Gas technologies. The EO process is inherently time-consuming due to the pre-treatment, exposure, and aeration stages. Processing time is often combined with the time required to accumulate sufficient inventory and transport the product to the sterilizer. As a result, manufacturers can lose inventory for days to a month through the sterilization process, increasing inventory costs.
