Brain Computing Interfacing (BCI)
The human brain is made up of billions of nerve cells called neurons. They have an amazing ability to gather and transmit electrochemical signals. Electroencephalography (EEG) records this electrical activity, and this is what is used in BCI. In general, there are two forms of BCI - invasive and non-invasive. The invasive BCI requires electrodes to surgically implanted through the skull into the brain to monitor the activity. One of the applications of this technology is that it allows blinded people to recover their sight with a bionic eye partially. Earlier, it was only possible to monitor the neural activity, but now it is also possible to communicate with existing brain tissues and has the potential to replace brain damaged regions with microchips, which is the extreme form of bionic HMI.
Myoelectric control is similar to BCI, but it is interested in electrical characteristics of muscles. Electromyography (EMG) is the process of monitoring electrical signals. EMG operates in millivolts, which is much stronger than EEG and does not require any amplification. Muscles do have electrical properties, and they come from an electro-chemical reaction. Myoelectric HMI is quite feasible as an interface, and one of the major applications in a prosthetic limb such as an arm or a leg. Similar to camera gesture recognition, EMG gesture recognition can be used as a rich source of input to control several things such as hands-free portable music player, simulated aeroplane, and a prosthetic hand. Any action performed by muscles or limbs can be converted into an electrically signal and can be used to control any electrical device.
