The electric pressure washing segment captures more than half of the global market, followed by gas and battery power washer segments. The equipment with a maximum pressure of around 2500 PSI is generally used for domestic purposes, including cleaning small decks, patios, furniture, and stain removal.

A gas pressure washer, on the other hand, is more powerful and is used for heavy-duty cleaning purposes. Most gas-powered models produce the pressure of around 2800 PSI, with high-end models reaching up to a maximum level of 4200 PSI. A battery washer is powered by lithium-ion batteries. It can be used without electric and water supply. Further, battery-powered equipment are silent, require low maintenance, and do not produce fumes.

Insights by Output Types

The pressure washer market by output can be categorized into 0 to 1500 PSI type, 1501 to 3000 PSI type, 3001 to 4000 PSI type, and 4000 PSI+ type. The 1500 to 3000 PSI type segment dominated more than half of the market in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 3% during the forecast period.

The 1500 to 3000 PSI washer type segment consists of gas and electric power sources. This equipment is extensively used for cleaning of concrete, sidewalks, walls, and other hard surfaces. The 3001 to 4000 PSI washer segment is the second largest one by output. These models are highly powerful and are used for heavy-duty outdoor application; they can easily remove mud, dirt, dust, and debris from sidewalks.

Generally, battery-operated equipment falls under the category of 0 to 1500 PSI. They are used for light duty cleaning purposes. They are highly portable, produce less noise and are lightweight. The 4000+ PSI segment accounts for the smallest share of around 8%. As they are designed for heavy-duty commercial use, they require high-maintenance and comparatively are expensive than other variants.

The residential segment accounted for more than one-third of the market in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 3% during the forecast period. The increase in dual-income households and the growth of aging population are expected to increase the size of the residential segment.

The commercial segment comprises heavy-duty washers that are used in multiple sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, and municipality. Growing labor costs, increasing business opportunities, and a rising number of vehicles have fueled the demand for commercial cleaning equipment. Major drivers for the growth of the contract cleaning industry are increasing disposable income, rising construction expenditure, and growing business establishments.

Europe accounted for one-third of the global market in 2018. Growing business investments, increasing commercial and residential construction activities, and rising government spending on infrastructure are major factors for the high share in Europe.
